Applications are invited for the position of Legal Counsel (LC) with the Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA). Applicants must have tertiary qualifications in Law. The applicant should have hands-on experience in inter-governmental negotiations, national fisheries legislation, regional fisheries conventions and arrangements relating to the western Pacific, and legal drafting. Applicants should also have a good knowledge of international legal instruments and agreements relating to the tuna fishery in the Pacific region. The LC has management responsibilities for the Legal Division within FFA, and is a member of the FFA management team. Applications from both men and women are sought. The appointee will be based in Honiara, Solomon Islands. Extensive travel will be required, mainly within the Pacific region. The successful candidate for the position will be expected to take up the appointment around September 2004.A three year contract will be offered for the position. This contract may be extended for a further three year subject to satisfactory performance, available funding and the ongoing need for the position.An attractive remuneration package is available. This includes a base salary for the position starting at Special Drawing Rights (SDR) 29,971 pa (at current exchange rate, this is approximately US$43,000 pa). Annual salary increments are available subject to satisfactory performance.
